Find That Email in Gmail!

What is the point of email anyway?

When it comes right down to it, email is more than just a simple method of communication. It truly gives you control and flexibility of your messages and your responses. Unlike an in-person conversation, you can go back review what you promised and what your client needed. (If you can find that email).

Have you ever lost an email into the wasteland of email cyberspace?

If so, here are a few things that can help if you are using Gmail.

    Ways to search in Gmail

    Search Wizard

Most of the fields are self-explanatory. Enter the parameters and then hit the search icon. (this is also the first step in creating a filter in Gmail)

    Entering Commands

After you choose parameters in the search wizard you will notice that information is entered into the basic search field in your Gmail. This shows a string of commands that tell Gmail what to search for. You can enter the commands directly without using the wizard.

Finding an Email Within a Span of Time

Did you know that you can search for email within a span of time a long time ago without scrolling back for years and years?

Give this a try
Go to your email account and in the search field type or (copy/paste) the following command:

    after: 2017/07/01 before: 2017/07/07

Finding an Email that has an PDF attachment

Give this a try
Go to your email account and in the search field type or (copy/paste) the following command:

    filename:pdf

Finding an email that was sent TO a specific email address

(handy if you have several email accounts to monitor in one email system.)

    To: [your email address here]

Use AND, OR and NOT with your search terms

OR – Will produce emails with either term. (This is the default setting in searches)
AND – Will only produce emails with both terms of the search.
NOT – Will only produce emails that have the first term and do not have the second term.

    work OR play

    work AND play

    work NOT play

More and more we are finding the need to weed out information and streamline the process of finding useful information. These strategies also work when doing searches of the internet to find things you need. The trend in organizing information is moving more to a “search” model and away from the traditional model of filing things in folders for later retrieval.
