Choosing Your Digital Office Universe
Although the possibilities are endless, we seem to have a limited amount of creativity we can call upon during the day. I get tempted to spend my energy looking that really cool thing that no one has thought of. Like Tesla, I really thought I was on the cutting edge by liking those cars, and now, before I could reasonably afford one, I am seeing them everywhere. All that research for naught!
And the reality is, what I needed was what every suburban mom with children in school and stuff needs, is a minivan (ugh!). They are not as cool as the Tesla, but they get the job done.
The same could be said for your digital office universe. Like getting a minivan (ugh!) you may not be “cool” but you won’t go wrong with Google or Outlook.com. I have itemized a few features that come in really handy for both, and by limiting your options to these you can use your creative energy researching things that will actually improve your life and your business.
Useful features of both Gmail and Outlook.com and to a slightly lesser extent, iCloud.
They offer free email that you can keep forever as long as you use it regularly (like once every several months).
You can set filters to funnel and label unwanted, save for later, and must respond NOW! types of email situations.
Folders/Tags/Labels can be created in both to help keep your email organized.
They can also be used as email clients. This means you can set up a completely different email brand like __@Comcast.net or __@Yahoo.com to be read and responded to through the Gmail or Outlook system. Outlook the program and MAC mail are both popular email clients that don’t care which “brand” of email you are using.
Both have calendars and contact lists that can be accessed and synchronized easily by smartphones. These calendars also have sharing and multi-calendar features.
The last thing I will mention is that other services that coordinate with email, contacts or calendars usually can link with at least Gmail or Outlook.com, usually both. (Gmail is more popular for this – think: Timetrade, zoom, Insightly, Join.me, Calendly, 17 Hats, Eventbright etc.).
See you around the internet,
