Where the Wild Files Are
How familiar are you with how your files are organized on your computer?
Today we are talking about locating your files using Windows Explorer for PC and Finder for Mac. They both work in very similar ways.
Everything on your computer is in folders. Most of the things that make your computer run and “work” are safely in application folders, hidden from your general use, so you don’t accidentally mess with them.
The folders that concern you in your daily life are your “Document folders” or “User folders”. They are also listed by category for your organizational pleasure according to what Microsoft and Apple think you want. The default folders, or sometimes called “libraries” consist of Documents, Pictures, Videos (Movies), Music and Downloads. The only thing truly special about these folders is the settings for how they are displayed and how some defaults are set. (Everything can be adjusted).
Whenever you save something, whether an attachment from your email, a PDF download from an opt-in, or just saving a word document you can “Browse” to a file location on your computer to save it and retrieve it later.
Often, files will be saved to the previous location where you saved a file, or to a location pre-defined by the type of file it is or how you acquired it (Such as, downloaded files go to your downloaded folder.)
How you choose to organize your files is a personal choice, (I do have ideas about it) but being aware of the system and how to navigate it is very important.
This week’s challenge is to simply open your user folders and take a look.
